1. Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
The action takes place on stage at the Town and Gown Theater in Athens, GA. The set portrays an apartment in a city, in real time. Amir is a middle eastern lawyer who has denounced his affiliation with Islam, but because of his looks he is constantly reminded that he is the same person he is trying to avoid.
2. What is the intrusion?
The intrusion happens when we see Amir upset because of a case which got bad publicity. The person Amir was defending in court tied him to an extremist Islam group.
3. What is the unique factor?
To me, the unique factor is that Amir’s wife was more interested in Islam than he was.
4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play?
Will Amir put his shame of looking Muslim aside and try to fix his marriage? Will Amir’s wife stay with him even though he treats her badly?
5. List some of the themes of the play.
Spousal abuse, promiscuity, shame, hate, racism, family relationships.
6. What do the principal characters want and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of them getting what they want?
Amir wants to get the respect he feels is due and get the promotion he has been waiting for. What keeps him from getting to his goal is the constant hate and shamefulness that he portrays to everyone. Behaving this way only makes people not trust him.
7. After having seen the Town and Gown production of the play write a paragraph each on the following:
a. overall quality of the production, realizing that it is not a fully mounted (financially supported) work on the season of Town and Gown.
I feel the quality is as good as an off season will get. The set was well designed, and lighting was very good. I did have trouble hearing some of the characters. The costume design was exquisite. The main character used a proper balance of accent and dialogue that was easy to understand while, at the same time, keep a reminder of his foreign origin.
b. comment on the acting and focus on your favorite role and it’s execution.
I cannot recall his name but the actor that played the Jew who had an affair with Amir’s wife. I believe he played his role very well. He articulated his words very carefully and convinced the audience of his role. My favorite part from him was the discussion he had with Amir at the dinner table. He physically made his face red from anger which made me feel as if perhaps he was angry about something.
c. evaluate the directing focusing on the casting of the roles, stage movements, set design, costume design, lighting design, and sound design for the show.
I feel that transition between scenes was done well for the type of circumstances the stage had (no curtains). The actors were superb at changing clothing at a fast rate. Lighting kept me focused on the action and directed eye movement and importance of the scene. Each actor did a very excellent job with roles they were easy to follow and understand. Amir always wore expensive shirts which gave me the impression that he was a successful lawyer. When he wore nothing but an undershirt, I had the feeling he had lost it all. Costume design was well done.
d. any unique factors about the production that stand out.
The use of the balcony and door were interesting to me because it gave the impression of an exterior to the apartment which separated characters in an efficient manner.
